WORLD MUSIC

There are a number of web sites you can use as resources for exploring music from around the world. These include: World Music Central, Smithsonian Folkways, National Geographic World Music, and Songlines Magazine.

The SBC library provides a guide to a number of music-related databases, including Music Online: Contemporary World Music.

I have a fairly substantial collection of World music, particularly African music, so if you’re interested in browsing and are on SBC’s campus, you can access my iTunes playlist by using the password Africa. Here are a few samples:

China:  Gong Chio Xia, “Chiang Wei Cu Cu Kai
Lebanon: Fairuz, “Shat Iskandaria
Algeria: Souad Massi, “Ya Kelbi (Oh! My Heart)
Egypt: Ali Hassan Kuban, “Mabrouk Wo Arisna
Pakistan: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, “Mustt Mustt
